Figuring Out Your Passion and Calling

When it comes to WAHM ideas, that is, ideas for moms to make money at home, most of them seem to involve selling some multi level marketing product that is far overpriced, endless home parties, or maybe making crafts and hoping to sell them either online or at craft fairs. Very few people talk about calling and passion in terms of the WAHM.

I was thinking about this recently, and decided maybe this is because WAHM stands for Work at Home Mom, emphasis on at home mom. We want to be home and around for our kiddos as they grow up, not running a company. We’re only in it for the money, so to speak.

The sad thing is, the money isn’t all that great when you’re heart isn’t in it. As a WAHM, as I said before in this post on the time-money tradeoff for WAHMs, our main focus is on time with our kids, not spending time trying to hock someone else’s wares at home parties or making endless craft items for minimum wage. Am I right?

When you find something you are really, really passionate about, you no longer have to sum up the courage to talk to someone about a great business opportunity that you know in your heart is only bringing in $3.83 a week for you after expenses. The only products (or services) that truly sell themselves are those things that we are really passionate about and good at. I can’t tell you what that is for you. I can only tell you what that is for me.

Every WAHM needs to Think Passion

The best way to figure out your passion and your calling in life is to take a little bit of time and listen. Think. Pray. Brainstorm. Grab a notebook or a sheet of scrap paper, and write the ideas. we can weed them out later. Don’t think products just yet. Think passion.

  • What fires you up?
  • What would you do with your time and expertise, even if you never made a penny? (that was a big one for me) In fact, what are you doing, what services are you providing, what questions are you answering for free already? (hint: look at your Facebook timeline and your messages)
  • What do you love to talk about?
  • What drives you nuts?

Think About Your Skills

On another sheet of paper, think about another set of questions, while trying not to think about what you answered about your passions above.

  • What are you good at?
  • What skills do you have that others compliment you on?

Now look over how these line up. Most of the time, there will be quite a bit of overlap.

Those areas of overlap are those areas where you should focus, because they demonstrate to you, as a WAHM or potential WAHM, what areas you are good at and excited about.

How to Monetize Passion

I suppose the question you might be thinking now is this, “I have such and such that I’m super passionate about, but that doesn’t pay the bills”.

I hear ya.

There are a few ways you could figure out how to monetize that passion.

You could blog about it, with Google Adsense on the blog. That would be a start. Affiliate revenue on the blog for related products could also help.

You could also ask those around you, or maybe even ask a few friends on Facebook to help you brainstorm business ideas for that topic.

Take some time to sit on it, pray over it, ask around, and come up with something unique to your passions.
